Azuma Asobi was a the name of a festival performed in Eastern Japan between the Spring equinox and Summer solstice.

Hokusai is best known for his great wave and his series on the Tokaido road. However he had a huge output, and this is a much earlier work in his career. The prominent use of reds and pinks in this volume are due to the lack of the ink Prussain Blue, which arrived in Japan around 1830, and would go on to define his later work.
